A search of the woman’s desk revealed previously unknown details about her dark past. The private detective hired by her fiancé, Jonathan, to investigate her financial past found that Jillian was in a huge amount of debt, exacerbated by her inability to find a job due to the unexplained shortfalls in receipts at her previous job, where she had worked as a night manager at a restaurant.
He had tried to reach her to discuss the report, but she would not return his calls. She had not been forthcoming when asked if there was anything in her past that could come back to bite them after marriage. Her secrecy was one of the cons of the relationship.
He’d hated to spy on her, but he couldn’t afford to find himself in a financial crisis at the age of 70, particularly as he had always possessed great credit. He and his late wife had been honest in their taxes, avoiding penalties that could destroy one’s credit and sense of accomplishment.
Although he loved Jillian dearly, he had no choice but to end the engagement after reading the report and her reluctance to talk with him. The fact that she failed to reveal any of her financial past to him was a deal-breaker.
