Know Your Value in God’s Eyes: Sunday Devotional

Gibbs Gardens, Ball Ground, GA, 2024

Luke 12:6-7 “What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.

With a bird feeder on the back deck, I can watch the birds come to eat daily. There are so many different birds of varying colors, and I think they are all beautiful! My favorite is the male and female cardinal. The male is red, and as a child, I was taught that when I saw a red bird, I was to throw kisses at it for as long as it was visible, for good luck. I still do when a male cardinal comes to the feeder, although I no longer believe in superstition, but you never know!

I am reminded, as the squirrel succeeds in reaching the bird feeder, that God provides for all of his creations. He promises that we need not think about what to eat, drink, or wear, for He knows we have needs for these things (Matthew 6:25-27). As valuable as birds and other animals are to God, Scripture reminds us that humans are more valuable than a flock of sparrows. Why is that so? I believe for three reasons.

First, each of us is unique, with our various personality traits and idiosyncrasies. We are priceless and of great value and worth because of our differences. There is only one me and you. Second, Jesus died to save us from our sins. We can make decisions to accept Christ as our Savior and Lord. Third, we are made in the image of God, with the ability to love and show compassion, forgiveness, and kindness to one another.

Today, let us realize that the One who knows the number of hairs on our head sees us as the most valuable of His creation, as we are the apple of His eye. Psalm 17:8 states, “Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.” And Zechariah 2:8 reminds us, “For thus said the Lord of hosts, after his glory sent me to the nations who plundered you, for he who touches you touches the apple of his eye.”

Know your value and worth in God’s eyes. Regardless of what humans may think of you, see yourself through the eyes of our Savior and Lord, who loves you with an unfailing and everlasting love, and wants you to come to Him, regardless of the sins in your life. He will accept your plea for forgiveness and love you in ways no human could. Also, see the humanity of others that may look, live, or think differently than you, for they are also made in God’s image and are valuable to the Lord.

Amen.
