I watch the sparrows sitting on the branches, waiting for the moment when some inner voice informs them it is time to migrate and make the long journey. Memories of home emerge, and with a flutter of their wings, they fly away, over mountains and valleys, not thinking about the possibilities of crashing or failing to arrive at their pre-determined destination. Stretched across the sky, flocks of sparrows soar with a certainty that resembles a strong faith. They don’t go slinking away furtively, like the fox in the woods. No, they make noise as they fly high above us, fearful of nothing.
Fidgeting to fly once again to distant places where the church bells ring every hour and still my soul, I want to have the faith of the sparrows that the journey will be without incident. I want to overcome my fears of flying, which often make plane travel such a chore for me. I wish to avoid the crass remarks of people who tell me that I am being silly because flying is safer than driving my car.
Instead of fear winning, I will reflect on a fragment of Matthew 10:29, “But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.” Remembering that just as the Lord watches over the sparrows on their journeys, He will watch over me, too. I will fly with faith and assurance, recognizing that I will never fly alone.
