He realized that she had seen him, and he couldn’t let her get away. He couldn’t chance losing her love again. Jonathan had loved Leslie in high school. Neighbors all through school, when she had told him of her love, as much as he adored her, he was more focused on his future as a barrister, and he simply wasn’t ready for a full-time relationship. The disappointment in her eyes was ephemeral, but he did not miss it. It felt like taking a sucker punch to the stomach, causing her pain; yet, he wouldn’t change his mind. He picked career over love, and the die had been cast.
He became one of the top barristers in the country, as well as one of the wealthiest, with clients from the worlds of show business and politics. However, he never found a woman who loved him like Leslie did. When he returned to his hometown, she had gone off to college. Their paths never crossed again, until the fateful day on a street in Paris.
He approached her hesitantly, not sure if she had forgiven him. But her greeting was so genuine. She smiled and took his hands in hers. He puckered up and gave her a kiss on both cheeks, and she did not resist. He asked her to join him for coffee, and as they sat, he apologized for hurting her and asked if it was too late to accept her love. He had never stopped thinking of her, which is why he hadn’t married. The magic of a Paris night worked once again, as Jonathan and Leslie walked near the Eiffel Tower and made plans to see each other again. As he walked back to his hotel, he thanked God for the joy of giving and receiving love, and for second chances at love.
