Having a Good Defense is Critical to Our Mental Health: Sunday Devotional

Psalm 34:4-7 I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.

When troubles or physical pain come, our minds can be foggy because of the strain on our mental health. It is physically and emotionally tiring to continue wondering when and how we will overcome present troubles. Fear of being permanently in the situations of our lives wears us down, and our mental health suffers. So, we must have a good defense, meaning someone who hears us, sees us, and doesn’t mind coming to our rescue. How and when the Lord acts is not for us to know, but by faith in Him to do so, we can find peaceful moments, even as we remain in the fray.

The psalmist, King David, is believed to have penned this text when he was forced to pretend to be insane before King Achish of Gath, because he was afraid of him. David had been fleeing from King Saul, who wanted to kill him. David assures us that if the Lord is our defense, He will save us from our troubles, and His angels will encamp around us, delivering us from our enemies, even sickness, which seems to me these days like the work of Satan in my life.

Let us lay our fears at the feet of Jesus, including shame, guilt, or any other emotion or issue that hinders our ability to trust that the Lord is a present help in the times of trouble (Psalm 46:1) and that the battle belongs to the Lord (2 Chronicles 20:15). The Lord God Almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is our best defense. Nothing is impossible or hard for Him to help us defeat.

Amen.
