Proverbs 16:23-24 From a wise mind comes wise speech; the words of the wise are persuasive. 24 Kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.
The words we hear on social media today are often harsh and mean-spirited. They damage the souls of people. The division in the United States creates word storms that are as destructive as the strongest hurricane or tornado. People’s emotions and peace are swept away in powerful maelstroms of hate, lies, and prejudice. It should not be so among people who trust in the Lord, but even in houses of worship, there is disunity because of the words that people speak as they accept one political philosophy over the other.
Yet, as believers, we are one in each other, just as Christ is one in the Father and the Father in Him. How we speak to each other impacts our faith. Kind words are so much healthier for the body and soul. We need to hear kind words and speak them to others. It won’t change a lot of the political rhetoric, but it will bring peace to our souls and allow us to see each other as part of each other.
Jothan Nixon wrote a lovely song, “The Jesus in Me Loves the Jesus in You.” It says you are so easy to love, if I comprehend that we are one in Christ Jesus. When we recognize that all of us are made in the image of the Lord God Almighty, the words we speak will mirror those of Jesus: words of love, compassion, and justice. Let us be careful of the words we use, so we don’t parrot the ugliness and harshness that we hear in the news or read on social media. We are greater than the unhealthy words of the world, and the love that we speak into people’s lives will be sweet to their souls and healthy for their bodies, and for ours.
Amen.
