Giving the Best Gift of the Season: Sunday Devotional

Acts 3:1-8 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer, at three in the afternoon. Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God.

As I read the story of Peter, John, and the beggar at the gate called Beautiful, I remembered that there is still power in the name of Jesus. The beggar looked at the two disciples in anticipation of receiving money from them; instead, he received physical and spiritual healing as he began walking, jumping, and praising the Lord God. He learned the power of the name of Jesus to heal, to give hope, and to give us strength where we are weak.

That is still the work of the Body of Christ, to offer the gift of a Savior, Jesus, to a broken and dying world. Some churches don’t have the financial resources of the megachurches, but that should not prevent us from reaching out to tell the unchurched, the dechurched, and the never-churched about the love of Jesus. We can freely tell them about the life, love, death, and resurrection of Jesus, testifying to how Jesus has moved in our lives and will be a loving help and hope to them.

Isaiah 63:9 states, “I will tell of the Lord’s unfailing love. I will praise the Lord for all he has done. I will rejoice in his great goodness to Israel, which he has granted according to his mercy and love. He said, “They are my very own people.  Surely they will not betray me again.” And he became their Savior. In all their suffering, he also suffered, and he personally rescued them. In his love and mercy, he redeemed them. He lifted them up and carried them through all the years.”

So many churches are missing younger generations and are filled with people over 50. It won’t cost anything to send each of our children and grandchildren a text or email to tell them that Jesus loves them and to remind them to trust in Him when troubles come. Revealing to them the power of the name of Jesus may be the best gift they receive.

Amen.
