Happiness Makes the Soul Rejoice in Being Alive!

Daily writing prompt
What are 5 everyday things that bring you happiness?

I don’t think we are meant to always be happy, but it would be absolutely wonderful if we were. That would mean that everything brings us happiness. Yet, without the sadness of trials and tribulations, we would not be able to comprehend the concept of being happy.

Five things that bring me happiness are being with children and grandchildren, a great meal cooked to near perfection, an excellent murder mystery with an ending I could not foresee, a church service wherein I feel the presence of God and my soul feels touched by His hands, and each night as I hold my husband’s hand and feel his warm embrace just before the sleep comes.

In each case, it is the wonder that I am blessed to have such experiences, when so many people are not as fortunate. My husband and I are in Portugal, as three grandchildren and their parents live here. Friday and Saturdays were extremely happy days because we spent them with them.

We attended a hamburger festival in Porto on Friday, with hamburgers, one of my favorite foods, of all kinds, some too wild for me. But my husband and I shared a West Coast burger, with sweet bacon, onion bits, Angus beef, a Venice Beach sauce, and a brioche bun. I was happy, because I experienced three of my favorite things, as at the end of the night, my husband and I embraced at the end of a great day.

So, happiness doesn’t happen every day, which makes the moments when it does occur special and memorable. I don’t know if I would like to be continuously happy, but that is the utopia that many of us hope for when we experience sadness, pain, grief, and troubles. I have come to find joy more sustainable, defined as peace in my soul, regardless of what is happening. Those fleeting moments of happiness serve to make me glad to still be alive! Each day a gift.
