I attended a concert of Winton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in Atlanta. It was pure joy! The music was amazing! There was a moment in the show that Helped make the night memorable. One of the musicians was from Atlanta, and he and his mother came on stage to perform together.
When I heard that his mother was going to sing as he played, I was concerned that I had spent money to hear professional musicians, not their parents. This was a regular feature of Marsalis’ concerts. But when she started to sing and scat, it was heavenly! You could tell that that there was mutual appreciation and pride between mother and son. That woman could sing, and her son could play. She reminded me of the great Ella Fitzgerald. It was like getting a concert within a concert. What a wonderful element to add to the occasion.
Yet, it was the trumpet playing of Winton Marsalis that made the night special. I had listened to his records for years, but to hear him in person was a lifetime experience. His trumpet practically talked! It was pure magic. There was so much applause for him, but he shared the acclaim. Each member of the band had solos, and many of their compositions were included. He ensured that all of the band members were celebrated and given their due. The camaraderie between him and the band members, with laughter and jive talking, added to the wonder of the experience. I was a night of great music and fun. I never forgot it.
