It may be one of the scariest times on the trip, as the plane accelerates and speeds down the runway, but it is the moment I feel truly alive. I want to shout, “Here we go!” I realize I am not in control and cannot change anything that might happen. So, I grab my Kindle to read or my puzzle books, and let go and let God. It is freeing! I am still nervous, but I trust that whatever happens, the Lord is with me. As the plane levels out and the seatbelt sign goes off, I feel my adventure has begun.
When I look up in the sky and see a plane soaring overhead, I always say a prayer: “May God go with you to your destination!” It feels like I place a hedge of protection around the plane, and, yes, I know that sounds a little weird. So, I do the same for my flights.
There is something rejuvenating and invigorating about not letting your fear of heights or planes dropping out of the sky keep you from living life as fully as possible. I feel alive thinking about all the places I will go and things I will see at my destination. Sometimes, I settle back and watch a movie or television shows I normally wouldn’t watch at home. For example, I came to enjoy the show Abbott Elementary, with each 30-minute episode helping the time pass until arrival at our destination.
When we board a plane, I start feeling excited, but it is after the engines rev and what I call the “NASCAR moment” begins that I become fully human, as every nerve seems energized for the journey ahead. It is one of the greatest moments of any trip. Now that we have planned our trip to Norway this month (cheaper rates for housing and fewer tourists), I am in full anticipation of experiencing once again that truly amazing moment when I become one with the birds and the clouds. Of course, landing is just as scary, as you hope the brakes will hold, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the takeoff.
