Casey stood on the porch of his new home, away from the fame and lights that he once thought were the “best things since cornbread.” But the costs were too high for him to keep paying without losing his soul. The ravages of his spirit weren’t visible, but he felt his self-love slipping away every day. Finally, he acknowledged that to save himself, he needed to learn to be alone.
While filming his last western, he had seen that little log house and wondered if he could live so far from others. He doubted that he could, but knew he had to try. To get there meant a long, lonely trek across mountains and fields that would take days. He couldn’t remember how many times he nearly reversed his steps and returned to what he knew best. He’d kept putting one foot in front of the other. To be here is an accomplishment that feels better than any award or honor.
He looked at how far he had come, and he was proud. He didn’t know how long he would stay or if he would ever leave. He had finally made a decision and followed through. That alone was a victory. He was finally at peace in his isolation.
