Answering questions from sparks from a combustible mind

When you are old, what do you think children will ask you to tell stories about? If you are “old,” what stories do you tell your grandchildren?

My grandchildren love to hear stories about when their parents got in trouble in their youth. They especially enjoy hearing stories wherein the parents did the same behaviors they are now punishing their children for doing. Once my oldest daughter asked me why I would tell her daughters of the craziness she put me through, and I told her that it’s called “poetic justice.” The grandchildren also like to hear of my travels.

When did something start out badly for you but in the end, it was great?

I was laid off from my job, and I thought it was the worst thing in the world, as I had four adopted children depending on me to provide for them. But, while I was off, I got pregnant, and because I had suffered two miscarriages before, the doctor placed me on bed rest. I was in bed for over four months, but I gave birth to a healthy baby boy. I shudder to think what would have happened had I been still working. The lay-off was the best thing ever!

What do you think you are better at than you actually are?

Cooking is it hands down! I cooked tortellini last night, and I thought it was the best thing I’ve cooked in a while. I was so proud and I went to town eating it, but Douglas took a couple of bites and said he could not eat it. I just knew I was going to be swimming in compliments.

What would be the worst thing to hear as you are going under anesthesia before surgery?

I hope she has a will!

What did you appreciate or what made you smile this past week?

My oldest son has become a grandfather for the second time, and he sent me a video of his new granddaughter, Knola, in which he swears that she is saying hello and hi, although she is not yet two months old! I told him that she is just babbling like babies do, but he swears we have a genius on our hands and possibly the first black woman president! I just smiled on my end of the phone. I have been around enough babies to know better!

  1. You have a singular honor (I think) of being the only person who tells stories to her grandchildren! I was thinking about that question and thinking, to my dismay, that it’s obsolete – and then I read this. Oh thank you! I’m so glad the story tradition goes on. It’s important IMHO. What lovely answers overall too! And I bet you cook better than you might think! 😉
