The old belief that sticks and stones break bones
But words will never hurt you is very wrong.
For, feelings can be delicate affairs that often
Fracture easily, for people’s psyches are seldom strong.
Indeed, feelings are carelessly hurt in endless ways,
And the resulting scars can be difficult to overcome.
Name-calling, fat- or thin-shaming, and judging,
And from them we just want to escape and run.
So, I am careful to think before I judge others,
For I know not their stories, trials, or pain.
And I would hope that others will do me the same
And not disparage my looks or my good name.
Poem written for the Weekend Writing Prompt from Sammiscribbles: 106 words on the prompt Delicate.
Excellent take.
