When we first saw him, we knew.
Like us, he had survived the worst.
Forty-five patient minutes to the car.
His fear nearly caused my heart to burst.
He came to love us both so very much,
He hated for us to be out of his sight.
When we would come home from work,
He’d jump in our arms with all his might.
Through him, I understood God’s love,
As I forgave him for his many accidents.
He accepted my faults and imperfections,
And loved me the way that love was meant.
When we played outside or went for walks,
We helped each other overcome our fears.
When I think of the joy he brought to me,
His loss can still bring me to silent tears.
Thank you, Lord, for allowing me to be
Mother to a dog who knew of real love.
I realize that it wasn’t by a coincidence,
But Bailey was truly a gift from You above.
Written for OctPoWriMo 2019 Challenge. Today’s prompt was a poem about fur babies. I automatically thought of Bailey and the joy that that wonderful do brought to me by loving me so unconditionally. I got a kick out of the vet adding our last name to his name, a reminder that we were his parents.
Very special gift from God indeed.

We love our little chihuahua mix, who was also a rescue dog. He’s so psychologically damaged. He was a stray, and we think he ran away from an abusive home. He’s afraid of everyone except me. He’s afraid to eat his food. I think he was beaten when he ate.
