Callie wondered if the new neighbors moving in across the street would allow her to love them. She’d had good reason to be a misanthrope, avoiding human society as much as possible, until that fateful day.
Head down, hiding the burn marks on her face that people claimed made her look like a raccoon, Callie’s dislike of humankind dissipated under the compassion of little Susie Helstrom. The child had reached up and touched Callie’s face, and smiling, she’d said, “You are beautiful!”
The joyful feeling of that act taught Callie what the command to love thy neighbor truly meant!
