A Tribute to the Fierceness of a Mother’s Love for Mother’s Day

With her child in need of dire help,

The mother bowed and begged the Lord.

She asked Him to mercifully cure her daughter,

With the fierceness of a lioness, she roared.

When told that she couldn’t receive assistance,

She did not give up and she did not give in.

She advocated for her child until she was healed,

For a greater faith Jesus had never seen.

On this day to honor the mothers in our lives,

I hope that every man, woman, boy, and girl

Will remember to thank the women who work

Everyday to give their children the world.

I love the story of the Syrophoenician woman and her conversation with Jesus (see below). I believe Jesus enjoyed her sassiness and her faith. No, he did not call her a dog; He was using a metaphor.

Matthew 15: 22-28 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.” Jesus did not answer a word. So, his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.
