Safe Under the Shadow of His Wings: A Devotional

Psalm 57:1-5 (CSB): Be gracious to me, God, be gracious to me, for I take refuge in you.
I will seek refuge in the shadow of your wings until danger passes. I call to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me. He reaches down from heaven and saves me, challenging the one who tramples me. Selah. God sends his faithful love and truth. I am surrounded by lions; I lie down among devouring lions—people whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords. God, be exalted above the heavens; let your glory be over the whole earth.

We have moments when we feel completely overwhelmed by the brutality and ungodliness of others. We feel like the prey of mighty lions who are too strong for us. When this happened in my life, I learned of the safety of being under the shadow of God’s wings.

One night, someone I thought loved me hit me so hard that I fell from a porch, missed the three stairs down, and landed on the hood of a car. I should have broken my neck, but it was like angels were holding up my head. God was watching over me, and the lion that preyed on me was suddenly gone before I got out of the hospital.

God’s faithful love keeps us safe under the shadow of His wings and saves us in the time of danger. Often, I feel a warning not to go someplace or not to drive my car. I learned to heed the warnings and alerts that come into my spirit as God’s watching over me, and I trust Him to keep me safe.

Psalm 91:4 states, “He will cover you with his feathers; you will take refuge under his wings. His faithfulness will be a protective shield.” So, trust in the Lord and seek refuge under the safety of the shadow of His wings, whatever the troubles you are facing and the lions seeking to harm you. He has a purpose for your life, and He that began a good work in you will complete it. To God be the glory for the great things He has done.

Amen.
