The Constant Presence of the Lord Gives Me Strength: A Devotional

Amsterdam, 2024

Psalm 139:1-7 O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!

As I continue to overcome jet lag and return to normal life after traveling, I am reminded that whether I am at home or walking the streets of Budapest or Vienna, the Lord is with me. I can feel His presence as I pray for safety and journeying mercies. I can relax and enjoy myself, even boarding a boat to cruise down the Danube, because I believe that He goes before us and will be with me. King David wrote that the Lord sees us when we travel and when we rest at home. There is a comfort that makes it easier to travel without fears so great that they paralyze us into remaining at home.

There was a time when I suffered from agoraphobia and could not leave my home. My mother did not let me learn to skate, swim, or ride a bicycle, reminding me that I could be hurt or die. I grew up with anxieties that kept me confined in the house, and I travel vicariously through books. But one day, I realized that I trumpeted my faith, and being afraid to go anywhere meant that I needed to live my trust in God.

It was hard reversing years of conditioning, but finally I received the psychological help needed, and I began to go everywhere, even to Madrid and Geneva alone. So, trust in the Lord’s constant presence to give you the strength to believe that you are never out of His sight. Indeed, King David reveals to us that we can never escape from the Lord’s Spirit! He knows us better than we know ourselves. Yes, trials will come and accidents may happen, but with the Lord’s hand of blessing on us, no matter what occurs, He will be with us.

Amen.

  1. My heart hurts when I think that as a child you were never allowed to skate, swim, or ride a bike. These are activities that enrich childhood. Yes, you could get hurt or even die. But you could get hurt or die just staying in your house if a bad storm came. On the other hand, you grew to become an extraordinary woman anyway.

  2. Amen! What a powerful testimony of courage and trust—proof that God’s presence doesn’t just follow us, it leads us into freedom we never thought possible.
