Krispy Kreme Donuts Should Come with a Health Warning on the Box!

Krispy Kreme should have a warning on the box, similar to those for gambling and cigarettes, that alerts consumers to the addictive nature of the food, especially when hot. I don’t think anything has been more irresistible to me than those donuts. Once, I went to buy donuts for the whole family, which included nine children and three adults. I purchased two dozen, planning on each person having two donuts. I ordered all kinds, with jelly and covered in chocolate, my favorite. Needless to say, the outcome was quite what I had planned.

I had to take the bus home. As I waited for the bus, I had one of my two donuts. Well, before I got home, I had eaten nine of them. Yes, nine! I couldn’t believe I was so greedy, but having a nature that doesn’t alert me when I have had enough of something, I just ate them one after the other.

I didn’t know then that I was diabetic. All I knew was that I had never been so sick in my life. Each of the others had one donut. I don’t think I ate another Krispy Kreme donut for months. But, I will tell you that my sweet tooth loved every minute of that gorging.

Today, I may have one Krispy Kreme donut twice a year. My husband makes sure I don’t go to the donut store alone, and we do not stop if the “hot” sign is on. I seem to need a Krispy Kreme donut, all glazed and sugary, when I am in the darkest moments. No, eating a donut doesn’t fix the problem, but it reminds me that there are good things in the world. That knowledge seems to bring me out of the darkness and into the light. At least that’s what I tell myself.

I cannot remember when I last had a Krispy Kreme donut! With all the craziness of the moment in America and health issues related to my fall in Vienna, I am feeling some despair. But, I am older now, and I don’t play with diabetes, determined to eat right, so I can’t run to the donut shop for comfort anymore. However, when I pass by the local Krispy Kreme shop and the “hot” light is on, the line of cars in the drive-through reminds me that those boxes should carry a warning. They are as addictive as any cigarette or gambling!

  1. It is amazing how we get hooked into addictive behavior. Have never eaten a Krispy Kreme donut but I have over indulged in many sweet things. When life is difficult, a sweet guilty pleasure takes over. So good to hear you conquered the Krispy Kreme trap. Blessings!
