Sheltering in the Arms of the Almighty: Sunday Devotional

Psalm 91:1-2 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.”

Psalm 32:7 You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.

As a little girl who had no stable home, I found a hiding place in each house. I needed a safe space to hide when it felt like the world was upside down. When there was no place to shelter from the anger and histrionics of others, I would cower in the space between my bed and the wall. After I was baptized at age 9 and felt that God was always with me, I kept my little red Bible with the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs under my pillow, as a way to hide in the arms of the Lord.

Today, the world seems so hectic, and hate so prevalent in the United States, that I find myself wanting to hide away. But, instead of cowering in the dark as the storms of politics rage, let us make the Lord’s arms a shelter, a secret place where love abides, and a haven where we feel protected from the hopelessness that so many seem to feel.

The Lord is our hiding place, and His arms are big enough to hold us all. Listen to songs of praise today, letting His love, compassion, and hope cover your hearts, minds, and spirits. Yes, the Lord is our refuge and fortress, a present help in times of trouble. We will find solace in His mighty arms and unfailing love.

Amen.
