A True Neighbor Looks After Your Property

Daily writing prompt
What’s a moment when a stranger completely restored your faith in people?

We moved to our home seven years ago. It is in a semi-rural location, and the quiet was something I was not accustomed to, having always lived in urban settings. Even though we were told we didn’t need to lock our doors out here, I made sure all doors were locked, having learned that you can’t trust everyone.

Then, one weekend, we traveled out of town, and in our hurry to get away, we left our garage door wide open for three days! When we returned and saw it wasn’t closed, we worried that all of our stuff was gone, as the back door is never locked. But all was well, and we were astonished. In our old neighborhood, we would have been glad to still have the doors.

Then the young lady from across the street came over and informed us that when she saw the garage was open, she kept an eye on our house day and night, with the help of her younger brother. Nothing happened, and probably everything would have been safe without their vigilance. Knowing that, even though we were still strangers to her, she cared about our property renewed my faith in people. I had spent so much of my life learning to not trust people. Now, when we travel for long periods, she has a key. I trust her to take care of the house, and we try to return the favor. She is the epitome of a good neighbor.

  1. What a wonderful testimony to the kindness of your neighbors. Much prefer the quietness of a more rural area, where you know your neighbors and see wildlife. Your home is more a sanctuary, when you do not have to worry about thefts or intrusions. Thank you for sharing.
