Psalm 27:10 promises that if a father or mother abandons us, the Lord will keep us close. That has been the story of my life. I was nine years old and living without either parent in the home, when I entered a contest that required I learn to recite the whole of Matthew 28. Another little girl and I won the contest. I didn’t have a clue who this person who rose from the dead was, or if the story was real.
Then, one morning after Sunday School in the one year that I attended church as a youngster, the thought that I was loved, watched over, and valued landed on my heart, and I believed that God was real. It is that faith that taught me that everyone, even poor children, are seen as worthy of love. That is quite a lesson for a child who cried herself to sleep each night that her mother was away.
It has been nearly 66 years from that day when a light shone in my life and my faith began to grow. I have had many opportunities to need to remember that I have value and worth, regardless of the meanness of other human beings in finding joy in picking on someone they consider beneath them or simply enjoyed having control over another person. The Scriptures are still a book of learning for me, as perfection on this side of the Jordan River is absolutely impossible. My relationships with others requires me to continue to grow, so I can help others know what the love of God can be: a smile that reveals to others that I am so glad to pass their way.
My relationship with the Lord God still teaches me to love my neighbor, look for the humanity in every human being, to know that while I am not inferior to anyone, I am also not superior to anyone. I have learned to see the similarities in human beings, rather than differences. It keeps me humble!
