Watching the beautiful red flowers bloom usually uplifts my soul. But today it can’t lessen my anxiety about remaining at the castle. I learned a lesson: Do not take for granted that what we value in life will continue without our vigilance. I assumed my husband paid the bills, only to discover that was not the case.
Mr. Kennedy, the bank’s liaison, has come to negotiate a settlement of our debts. I declared my desire to keep the castle in my family, and I gave over my jewels. What good are diamonds when one is homeless?

Castles are notoriously expensive relative to heating, upkeep, and the like. Maybe sell the castle and buy a more practical home…and keep the jewels.

Regina, I wonder how many fortunes are frittered away just like that. Good story. I hope she booted the husband out. Good choice on the diamonds. Maybe she can rent out rooms or do tours to keep the place long-term.
