The perception of difference between people based on socially constructed categories that separate people into “them versus us” lends itself to the types of hate and intolerance that we are witnessing around the world. The belief that some people are more human, kind, intellectual, moral, or deserving of wealth and prestige than others fuels inequality and makes living on earth hell for so many.
So, my first question to aliens would be whether their world is a place where the command to love your neighbor as yourself is actually practiced and people truly accept that we are not all the same, but we are all human. If their answer were affirmative, my second question would be, “How long a journey is it from here?” It is a place where I would want to live.
Yet, love and true acceptance are possible on our planet if highlighting differences wasn’t such an effective tool in winning elections and rationalizing greed. We don’t need to travel through space to find a place where acceptance abounds if we weren’t so willing to allow the perception of difference to carry a weight that makes it a weapon that separates us and makes us afraid of each other, simply for the acquisition of power and control.
