The Music that Unites Us

It is the order of things unseen that music creates a bond across species. Each creature works to be safe. For the deer, that generally means leaping away from the danger of the two-legged animals who have instruments that bring death and a hungry look in their eyes.

The big stag usually would not allow his young one so close to one of “them,” but something is different about this creature, a sweetness that does not inspire fear. Her goodness is felt in the air. The mother deer tentatively steps out to listen to the sounds emanating from the piece of wood into which she blows.

The young girl envisions a time when the animals of the forest will not be afraid of humans. She plays energetically for her audience, as the lethargic feelings of early morning evaporate.

Her entertaining of the deer is an advertisement for the promise made eons ago: “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.” The music of the trumpet will be the key.
