Mediocrity Should Never Be Accepted or Desired: Sunday Writing Prompt

I was so aghast to learn that for some people

Mediocrity is not only acceptable, but desired.

The student who told me that he just needed a D

Made me wonder what in his life had transpired.

How does someone come to want so little out of life?

What leaves someone unmotivated to give their best?

What can be said to someone to get them to want more,

To give their all when they find themselves put to the test?

I believe it begins at home while we are little chidren,

With parents who tell us to finish the jobs that we start.

It’s true that if we train a child in the way that they should go,

When they are adults from those values they will not depart.

Don’t accept mediocrity in anything or desire it for yourself.

Instead expect the best from yourself and from others around you.

Because only doing the least needed to achieve your goals,

Doesn’t allow the world to witness the extent of the greatness found in you.

Written for the Sunday Writing Prompt from Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie. The prompt is Aghast.
