Life is full of uncertainty, with each day a mystery to be lived. The uncertainty derives from a lack of control over so many factors. For example, when driving, all we can control is our own cars, but not the cars of fellow drivers who seem hell-bent to go faster than anyone else on the road, without regard for the life or car of another driver. I am always grateful to arrive safe and sound at my destination.
I have faith that I am not alone on this journey, that a power greater than humans is with me. I believe in the Lord God, and I don’t disparage the deities that others worship. We are all searching for someone or something that has more power over the everyday, mundane aspects of life, who loves us and keeps us safe in times of uncertainty. We call it religion.
My faith has been instrumental in my success. When I have needed a job to support my children, I believed that the God I serve would open doors I could not see, and I had careers I never could have imagined. When I found myself lonely and fearing how desperation turns us into prey for unscrupulous people, I prayed for a spouse who shared my values and my love of traveling. I was blessed with the most wonderful human being.
So, although life is filled with uncertainty, with death the only real certainty, I put my trust in the Lord God because of the faithfulness and goodness I have witnessed, the miracles I can’t explain in human terms, and a feeling of protection that keeps me moving forward in this life. I have a hope that, even in the midst of the craziness of these times, I will be alright.
My faith isn’t superstition or misplaced fear. It is a real and necessary part of my life. It keeps my fears at bay and makes it possible for me to travel the world, not worry about what I will eat, drink, or wear, know that when my life ends, and to feel that a power higher than I is watching over me.
