I started to believe that I was meant to be in the last chapter of this life alone. But I had not given up hope that somewhere in the universe there was a significant other for me, someone like me trying hard to find the one whose mating call matched my heart’s song. One night, I did something that I had never done before: I lay prostrate before the Lord and cried out loud for help. I felt that only God knew exactly who I was hoping to meet.
I went digital, signing up for multiple dating sites. I always chose to meet black men, for I believed that our shared history meant they understood me better. Then, as I slept one night, or maybe it was a vision, I heard a small voice command me to change the setting to men of all races. A few days later, after my free trial on ChristianCafe.com ended, I received an email from a white guy with a wonderful profile who loved the Lord, traveling, and sports as much as I did. My first instinct was to say no to him, which I did. But he was persistent, in a good way.
This past June, we celebrated 22 years of marriage, and he takes such good care of me as I battle another health issue. I told him that he got a lemon. He responded that he was glad to make lemonade. I nearly didn’t pay the $25 to receive his message. Every day, I try to remember to thank God for loving me so much that he would send this wonderful man to share this chapter of my life, two seventy-somethings who are thankful that love found us in our fifties, when we had both nearly given up.
Sometimes in life, you have to trust that the Lord knows best, because he sees the whole future, while we can only see moments. I listened to that small voice, made the change, and today I realize that it was the best $25 I ever spent.
