Hebrews 11:3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.
Faith is not magic. It is a profound belief that there is an invisible realm, one that we can’t touch or fully comprehend, but we know that our Lord and Savior is watching over us there. Some people find it difficult to believe in what they can’t see or touch. When we visit Europe, I am amazed at the gilded carvings of saints, angels, devils, and, of course, Jesus. I watch as people bow down, reach out, and touch an object as they pray. I don’t judge them, for I believe that all religions are attempts to reach a power greater than us.
My faith is built on a strong foundation: the belief that the world didn’t just happen all willy-nilly, but that there is a power that formed the universe we can’t see, though we can occasionally feel it. Once, when I was learning to drive at age 50, I was attempting a left turn into a bank, and a man stopped to let me turn, but it was two lanes. I started into the turn, and I saw a car barreling toward me from the other lane. I could see the fear in the driver’s eyes, which mirrored my own dread, and I was paralyzed. I knew I was about to have a horrible accident, but I couldn’t move my feet.
Then, I felt a weight on my right foot, and I accelerated into the parking lot. I was safe, and more importantly, the other driver was safe. He must have been so frightened! I could have cost him his life. I made it a practice to pray that God would drive with me and for me, something I learned from a woman at a Christian women’s retreat in the Poconos years earlier that I never thought I would need.
That day, I realized that while we live in a realm where we can see the beauty of oceans, snow-capped mountains, trees of every shade of green, and the magnificence of the moon and sky, the Lord resides in the invisible realm, capable of influencing what occurs in our realm. That is the basis of my faith and trust in the God who made all things good and perfect. When I stand on the shore, with my toes in the ocean, I am reminded that I do not walk the world alone, unknown and forgotten by my Creator.
Today, reflect on how you have witnessed the invisible realm in your life. Trust in the One who loves you and knows you. Genesis 16:13 states, “Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lord, who had spoken to her. She said, ‘You are the God who sees me.’ She also said, ‘Have I truly seen the One who sees me?'” Like Hagar, I believe in the God who sees me.
