Find Reasons to be Amazed: Sunday Devotional

Proverbs 30: 18-19: There are three things that amaze me—no, four things that I don’t understand: how an eagle glides through the sky, how a snake slithers on a rock, how a ship navigates the ocean, how a man loves a woman.

I have a fascination with huge cargo ships. When we travel to Porto, Portugal every year to visit family, at the first possible moment I head to the beach to see which ships are in the port next door. The Ysaline is my favorite. I can sit for hours watching as large trucks drive onto it to load it up with goods. It is just that big that semis can navigate on it!

I try to rent an apartment near the port so I can get up early and watch the big ships leave. I am always amazed that they can stay above water with such huge loads of stuff on them. The idea of gravity and being built to float on the oceans astounds me. I would love to travel on one one day, but I can’t stand the thought of not seeing the shore, which is why I don’t take ocean cruises.

In the scriptural text, the author speaks of being amazed at four things, and I was stunned to see one of my list of amazing things on it, namely how a ship navigates on the sea. In Proverbs 30, the writer is discussing the difficulty of knowing God with our finite minds. The things that amaze us in the world and in nature help us to know the immensity of God and how amazing His love, compassion, mercy, and grace are to everyone. He calls us all to His banqueting table, to sup with Him and be filled with His Spirit and joy. King David wrote in Psalm 139:6, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!”

So, take a walk today, list the things you see that amaze you, like the changing colors of the leaves or the birds singing, and realize that all things come from the Lord God. Or simply be amazed at how much you love your children, spouses, family, and friends, and how wonderful it is to be loved by them. Then, bow in humble adoration at the wonders of the Lord God’s universe and how great our Savior and Redeemer is. He’s an amazing God!
